Environmental Sustainability: Delta State Ministry of Environment Commends Aniocha South LG Council On “Aesthetics And Cleanliness”.

Delta State Ministry of Environment, Asaba donates refuse bins to Aniocha South LGA…….. while commending the Council Officials for their efforts in promoting aesthetics and cleanliness of the Local Government Council Headquarters.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Environment, Dr. (Mrs.) Minnie Oseji accompanied by the Principal Environmental Superintendent, Miss Henrietta Onyibe paid an inspection visit to the Aniocha South Local Government today.

The team were received in the council by the Secretary to the Local Government, Prince Emordi Okonjo, the Assistant Chief Environmental Health Officer, Mr. Eluemunor Confidence, as well as other officials in the council. Dr. Oseji, conveyed the regards from the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Chief Godspower Asiuwhu, and indicated that the team was in the LGA as part of the Ministry’s efforts to extend the best practices in preserving the environment to areas outside Asaba, the State Capital. These practices include: Organization of sensitization activities on bagging and recycling of waste using fliers;
Serving of notices of abatement of nuisance to landlords/occupiers of premises with litter or overgrown weeds; and Monitoring of Environmental Sanitation activities of the Local Government Environment Departments. She informed the council that since January this year, only 11 LGAs have sent reports on their implementation of the monthly environmental sanitation days, and Aniocha South was one of them. In appreciation of this effort, the Ministry was donating refuse bins, rolls of refuse bags, as well as fliers to be distributed in places with high level of littering such as motor parks in order to re-orient the populace on proper disposal of waste. The Permanent Secretary commended the council for maintaining their efforts in promoting aesthetics and cleanliness of the Local Government Council Headquarters.

The Council Secretary appreciated the gesture of the Ministry, saying that they were spurred to do more. He informed them that the council Chairman, Pastor Jude Chukwuwike,
was a believer of the adage that “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” After the visit, the team from the Ministry in the company the Assistant Chief Environmental Health Officer, assessed the sanitation of 5 major roads namely: 1. Agidi-Ese Road

  1. Ogbe-Onicha Road
  2. Agidi-Ehe Road
  3. Ogwashi-Uku Isah Road
  4. General Hospital Road Road
    and scored them an average of 65% in cleanliness and vegetation control.

Strategies to overcome the challenge of inadequate Private Sector Participants (PSP) for evacuating household waste as well as establishing a befitting waste dump site were discussed during the visit.
