The Delta State Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) has commended the Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, for his swift approval of the new ₦77,500 minimum wage for state workers. In a detailed statement signed by the Delta State IPAC Chairman, Prince Henry J.E. Eze (JP), the council applauded the governor’s prompt action and his unwavering commitment to improving the welfare of workers in the state, describing the approval as a monumental step in fostering economic stability for civil servants.

Governor Oborevwori’s decision to authorize the immediate payment of the ₦77,500 minimum wage, effective from October, was hailed by IPAC as a reflection of the governor’s deep concern for the well-being of Delta State’s workforce. The council emphasized that in times of economic uncertainty, the governor’s proactive leadership demonstrates his dedication to alleviating the financial burdens faced by workers.

Prince Eze highlighted that Governor Oborevwori’s directive not only reinforces his reputation as a people-oriented leader but also aligns with principles of fairness and economic justice. “The governor’s approval of the ₦77,500 minimum wage is a monumental decision that underscores his sensitivity to the challenges faced by workers in the state. This decisive move will undoubtedly boost morale and improve productivity within the public sector,” he said.

In its statement, IPAC also commended the cooperation of the leadership of the Organized Labour, which worked closely with the committee on the new minimum wage inaugurated by the governor. The council noted that the harmonious collaboration between the leadership of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Trade Union Congress (TUC), and the Joint Negotiating Council (JNC), alongside the state government, played a pivotal role in ensuring the smooth progress of discussions on the wage implementation.

IPAC acknowledged that such cooperation reflects the maturity and unity of purpose between the state government and the labour unions, making it easier to address critical issues that affect workers. “We applaud the leadership of the Organized Labour for their constructive engagement and collaboration with the committee on the new minimum wage. Their cooperation has been instrumental in advancing this important cause, and it is a testament to the governor’s labour-friendly approach,” Prince Eze added.

The Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Emu, disclosed the governor’s directive during a meeting with the leadership of Organized Labour in Delta State. He mentioned that while the state is still assessing the financial implications of the wage adjustments, Governor Oborevwori instructed immediate payment to prioritize the welfare of the workforce.

IPAC further commended the governor’s forward-thinking approach, noting that even though the financial impact is still being reviewed, Governor Oborevwori fast-tracked the approval process, demonstrating his empathy for workers. “The governor has acted decisively, even as the state continues to evaluate the financial ramifications of the new wage structure. This is leadership at its best—taking bold actions while ensuring that the people’s welfare is always front and center,” Prince Eze remarked.

Prince Eze also reiterated IPAC’s support for Governor Oborevwori’s administration, calling on all political stakeholders and the general public to rally behind the governor’s initiatives aimed at creating a more prosperous and equitable state. “Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to the welfare of workers and his partnership with labour leaders shows that Delta State is on the right path. We urge all stakeholders to continue supporting the governor’s efforts to build a better future for the state’s workforce and citizens alike,” he added.

In conclusion, while commending the successful implementation of the ₦77,500 minimum wage, IPAC urged Governor Oborevwori to look beyond the minimum wage and consider other meaningful programs that will improve the lives of youths in Delta State. “We encourage His Excellency to also focus on youth-oriented initiatives that foster skills development, job creation, and entrepreneurship, which will enhance the overall well-being and future prospects of our young people,” Prince Eze concluded.
